Sunset, Sea,and Savory Delights at RAYA

By Jody Robinson

Perched dramatically atop the bluff at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, where the Pacific unfurls in endless shades of blue, my recent date night with my husband Tim at RAYA by Richard Sandoval was not just a dinner – it was an experience that lingered long after the last sip of cocktail. As the sky shifted from golden to indigo, we stepped into a world where coastal breeze, Latin-inspired flavors and impeccable service converged into what feels like Southern California’s most romantic moment.

Walking into the restaurant, the first thing that struck me was the panorama. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the ocean in a way that nearly made us forget our table was inside. Servers guided us toward a seat that felt close enough to catch the salt-kissed air as dusk approached. There’s a relaxed elegance here – an upscale vibe that isn’t stuffy, just beautifully attuned to comfort and occasion.

We began with fine wine that set the tone for what was to come. From the first taste of garlicky tortillas and ceviche to the last decadent bite of dessert churros, every dish showcased the restaurant’s commitment to sustainable seafood, local produce and coastal Latin flavors.

When I shared with our server that I fancy myself a seafood aficionado, he called out the Branzino Zarandeado as one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes: flaky, rich and seasoned with a citrus-kiss that dances on the palate. She also raved about the seafood enchiladas, brimming with fresh ocean bounty and thoughtful spice. Tim, on the other hand, leans toward meat and poultry dishes so a highlighted recommendation was the tender adobe-marinated grilled Jidori half chicken. And for dessert? The churros dusted with cinnamon sugar and chocolate dipping sauce that were a playful, memorable finish – a sweet punctuation mark on a symphony of flavors.

But RAYA doesn’t rest solely on its culinary laurels; the service was nothing short of exemplary. Our server anticipated needs before they were spoken – refilling water glasses just as the last drop disappeared and offering wine pairings that elevated each course. It wasn’t merely professional, but genuinely warm and attentive, adding a layer of hospitality that many restaurants aspire to but few achieve.

And then there’s the ambiance. As the sun slipped below the horizon, the ocean outside turned from amber to violet, reflecting on every surface. Dining here feels like being cradled by the coast itself. Couples nearby whispered over shared bites, and occasional laughter broke the soft hum of conversation. It was the kind of place where time slows – where an hour feels like two, and staying just one moment longer seems essential.

If you’re seeking a date night destination that marries stellar cuisine with unforgettable views and service that feels personal, RAYA delivers. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a setting, a story, and a celebration of coastal living. Whether for a birthday, an anniversary, or simply a night you want to feel special, this is where you’ll find it – with ocean breeze, candlelight, and that perfect final bite.
