Americana Reimagined

On a sunny afternoon in the River Street Marketplace in San Juan Capistrano, just a few steps from the historic charm and walkable streets that make the town so beloved, there’s a shop that feels less like retail and more like stepping into a living time capsule. Inside Old 44 Vintage, racks of worn-in denim, weathered leather jackets, turquoise jewelry, and nostalgic memorabilia invite visitors to slow down, explore, and reconnect with pieces of American history.

Opened in 2022 by owners Sam Wingenbach and Jake Cover, Old 44 Vintage is built on a simple yet powerful idea: that objects from the past still have stories to tell – and new lives to live.

Where the Past Meets Personal Style

From the moment you walk through the door, the shop’s atmosphere feels intentional. Vintage concert tees hang alongside American workwear. Glass cases display turquoise rings and historic memorabilia. A well-loved leather jacket from the 1970s might share space with an ‘80s band shirt or a carefully preserved advertising sign.

For Sam and Jake, curating the shop is about much more than simply selling vintage items.

“What sets our shop apart is our focus on authenticity and storytelling,” says Sam. “We’re not just selling vintage items – we’re preserving pieces of history and giving them a second life.”

That philosophy is reflected in every corner of the store. Each piece has been hand-selected for its craftsmanship, character, and cultural significance – whether it’s a perfectly faded pair of Levi’s, a Western belt buckle, or a rare concert tee that captures a moment in music history.

“Our goal is to bring pieces of the past into the present in a way that feels exciting and wearable,” says Jake.

A Passion Born from Experience

Interestingly, the path to opening Old 44 Vintage wasn’t paved through fashion school or traditional retail. Instead, the Sam and Jake trace their appreciation for vintage style back to a much more personal origin story.

Growing up in the 1990s, much of their shopping happened at thrift stores. At the time, it wasn’t about trends or nostalgia – it was simply what was available.

“There was never any taboo about wearing something that once belonged to someone else,” says Sam.

Over time, that early exposure turned into something deeper: an appreciation for craftsmanship, individuality, and the stories behind historic objects. Years spent wandering antique malls, digging through estate sales, exploring private collections, and even the occasional hoarder house sharpened their instincts for spotting meaningful pieces. What began as casual collecting eventually evolved into a full-fledged passion for sourcing items that reflect different moments in American culture. Opening Old 44 Vintage allowed them to turn that passion into a destination where others could experience the thrill of discovery.

The Art of the Hunt

Behind the scenes, the buying side of the business is every bit as fascinating as the curated displays customers see in the shop. Sam and Jake are constantly on the lookout for clothing from the 1990s and earlier, with particular interest in vintage graphic T-shirts – especially concert tees – along with classic denim and American workwear brands like Carhartt. But the hunt doesn’t stop at clothing.

“We also buy turquoise jewelry, old guitars, sports cards, Pokémon cards, advertising signs, art, and other historical items that have a unique story behind them,” they say.

What matters most isn’t simply age – it’s character. They’re drawn to items that show craftsmanship, individuality, and the kind of wear that only comes from real life. The small imperfections, the fading, the patina of time – these details give each piece personality and authenticity that modern manufacturing simply can’t replicate.

A Store Built on Discovery

One of the joys of visiting Old 44 Vintage is that no two visits feel the same.
Because nearly everything in the shop is one-of-a-kind, the inventory is constantly changing. A rack that held rare Western shirts last week may feature vintage military jackets the next. A glass case that once displayed turquoise jewelry might soon showcase collectible trading cards or a rare piece of Americana.

That sense of discovery is exactly what keeps customers coming back.

“In an era of mass production, there is something special about owning something that no one else has,” says Sam.

For many visitors, the experience is both nostalgic and personal. Some arrive searching for a statement fashion piece – a vintage leather jacket or perfectly worn band tee. Others are drawn to the memorabilia that reminds them of earlier decades, from historic signage to collectible cards and instruments. Designers, collectors, stylists, and casual shoppers alike find something to spark their curiosity.

Keeping History Alive

Perhaps what makes Old 44 Vintage so compelling is the sense that the store itself is part of a larger story – one about preserving culture, celebrating individuality, and finding beauty in objects that have already lived a life.

“We want people to feel like they’ve stepped into a place where the past is alive – where they can explore, reminisce, and find pieces that connect with their personal style or memories,” says Jake. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass production, that philosophy feels refreshingly grounded.

At Old 44 Vintage, every jacket, guitar, ring, or sign carries a piece of American history. And thanks to Sam and Jake’s passion for the hunt – and their appreciation for the stories behind each find – those pieces are ready to begin their next chapter with someone new.

For shoppers, collectors, and anyone who appreciates a little nostalgia with their style, that’s exactly the magic.
