The most recent season of Netflix’s revolutionary bio-drama The Crown follows Britain’s royal family to the Queen’s Scottish estate house, Balmoral. Views of verdant, rolling hills, and moody, dark skies await its guests. As a fan of the show and an avid traveler, I’d been dreaming about a family getaway. I couldn’t have been more excited when my husband and I planned a weekend retreat to La Jolla’s atmospheric the Lodge at Torrey Pines. I’d only seen photos of the sprawling expanse, and on the drive in felt utterly transported - just to the north of the property the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve showcases 1,750 sprawling acres of unspoiled land that protects its namesake - one of America’s rarest pine trees. By the time we pulled in under the Lodge’s porte-cochere and were greeted by doormen attired in traditional Scottish kilted dress, we knew we were in for an experience unlike any other.

Palisade Room Balcony 3rd FloorWith warmer, Craftsman detailing than you might find at the Queen’s residence, the AAA 5 Diamond rated resort boasts expansive public rooms with fireplaces, marble mantles, leather chairs, and unbeatable views of the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Beyond, you’ll find you’re looking at the Pacific, not the cool Atlantic - but to be honest, I knew I’d be hard-pressed to be pulled away from the cozy poolside cabana. The heated pool, especially during California’s winter months, was just what we all needed to unwind and relax.

Understandably, travel looks decidedly different these days and as a family with two middle-school aged children, safety is a top priority. Transparent in its commitment to ensure the well-being of resort guests, The Lodge’s Clean & Care Commitment protocols have earned the property a Clean + Safe Certification from the California Hotel & Lodging Association (see website for details).

Accommodation + Amenities

It’s easy to see why Sunset Magazine rated The Lodge as the #1 Hotel in the West and described it as “one of the most beautiful hotels anywhere.” Our stunning guest accommodation featured the most luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, gorgeous oversized soaking bath, a cozy fireplace, spacious living quarters and breathtaking views of the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course overlooking the California coastline.

We chatted with a couple who raved about the 36-hole facility owned by the City of San Diego, originally designed by William F. Bell. The South Course was redesigned in 2001 by Rees Jones in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Open and is now 7,698 yards with a par of 72. The North Course is 7,258 yards in length with a par of 72.

The Lodge features a full-service spa and state-of-the-art fitness center. Although these may be closed due to state guidelines at the time of your visit, there’s no shortage of open-air recreational opportunities - from outdoor yoga and croquet to golf, guided hikes and of course, the gorgeous heated pool.

Grill fireplace rockingchair

The Lodge’s signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, highlights seasonal cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients - delicious dishes we enjoyed “outdoors” in an elegant, open air, timbered dining room. The metal-strap post-and-beam structure, hand-crafted wood framed windows and stained-glass lanterns all a nod to its Southern California heritage and Craftsman architecture and further enhanced by the panoramic views overlooking the 18th hole of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

For starters, we sampled wonderfully fragrant and flavorful artisanal cheeses paired with spiced nuts and jam followed by a delectable crispy skin sablefish butternut squash tortellini, lobster consommé, pomegranate and preserved orange relish.

Lodge Aerial CopyDuring our stay, we also indulged in room service with wood-fired favorites (think chimney roasted chicken and wood-grilled tri-tip). My daughter and I are completely addicted to the charcoal bread avocado toast topped with smashed avocado, fennel, pickled and fresh vegetables, watercress and Everything seasoning and the wood roasted vegetable quinoa (our attempts to replicate the recipes at home came up a little short so she’s already angling for a return trip). My son would eat the Grill’s “Drugstore Hamburger” at every meal if you let him and my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband thoroughly enjoyed the cooked-to-perfection New York Strip paired with a glass of regional wine.

Thorsen Suite ExteriorAn offshoot of the early 1900s Arts and Crafts Movement, the Lodge boasts one of the loveliest examples of California Craftsman you can find. Clean lines, warm, open spaces, and naturally rough raw materials, like stone, wood, and plenty of natural light give beautiful complement to the deliberate and exceptional care the staff take to ensure each guest’s stay is comfortable and memorable. You’d think we were titled guests of the estate with the unprecedented service we received. The best part? You don’t have to claim a royal lineage to stay.ARV Deck View 2top

The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, owner of the iconic Huntington Beach-based Absolutely Fabulous gift boutique, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”

While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”

Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, holiday-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Ab Fab really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.

Recently, I, much like many Americans headed into their mid-50’s, realized that it was going to take much more than a brisk walk or a high intensity interval gym session to hold onto the muscle mass I’d worked so hard to attain, then maintain over the years. Also like many Americans, I spent too much time and money attempting to uncover the one magical combination of spinach salads, green smoothies, and exercise that would help me achieve that increasingly elusive goal.

hailey client pulldown squareAdults who don’t add a weight regimen into their weekly workout routine lose an average of a half pound of lean muscle each year after the age of 25. Women and men in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond who are striving to stay strong, avoid eventual falls, and keep up their energy levels sometimes need a little extra help. That's where LeAnne Fuller and The Perfect Workout comes in.

More than 20 years in practice, The Perfect Workout is LeAnne’s long-time purpose come to fruition.

“After taking pilates and yoga through my 30’s, I started the certification process to train them both," she says. "Going through the certification process led to some important realizations about my trajectory in life, and where I wanted to end up. Not one option included working just to work, or simply to bring home a paycheck. I needed to help people: to help them get healthy.”

ba photoSometimes, slow is fast, and the road LeAnne was on led her straight to The Perfect Workout’s doorstep a week later. Taking a step from training to running studios was simple, and from there to hiring trainers and leading certifications a no brainer. “My capacity to educate grew and grew, and thrilled me as I saw clients get stronger with every class. Folks started avoiding falls, having more energy to play with their children and grandchildren. It has been unbelievably satisfying.”

From Facility Manager of Redondo Beach to Regional Manager of Dallas, Houston, LA, SF, Orange County and San Diego, LeAnne has seen a broad range of clients, and an even more amazing spectrum of results. Specializing in 1-1 personal training, The Perfect Workout takes participants through slow motion strength training, engaging more muscle fibers than a typical workout. Reducing momentum provides a bigger challenge in a smaller time frame: so you can get the results you want in two 20-minute workouts a week instead of hours in the gym day after day. “Each exercise is performed by lifting weights for approximately 10 seconds and lowering the weight for another 10 seconds. You reach ideal intensity quickly- and then move on!”

Practicing safe, efficient movement allows LeAnne to guarantee you’ll be stronger in 6 weeks. Built for men and women who don’t want a traditional gym experience, or have never worked out but want to be healthy and strong, The Perfect Workout is, well, the perfect workout.

Travel for our family has always been an exciting opportunity to explore both far-flung destinations and closer-to-home hidden gems. During these unprecedented times defined by shelter-in-place and safer-at-home, we - like many families - pressed pause on several planned summer vacations and weekend getaways to destinations farther than an easy driving distance. For Southern Californians, the beaches are open, and the weather is bright and warm well into the fall and few places are as idyllic as Coronado Island to while away a couple of days in the surf and sand.

Just over the bridge from San Diego, Coronado is a small, quaint, tree-lined retreat characterized by beautiful, rarely crowded white sand beaches, a rich, romantic history and laid-back, small town atmosphere. Although locals refer to it as “the island,” Coronado is really a peninsula connected to the mainland by a finger of land called the Silver Strand. With wide leafy streets lined with Victorian homes and Southern California beach bungalows, the island is small enough to walk almost anywhere (it’s only a mile from the San Diego Bay side of the peninsula to the Pacific Ocean). Once we parked upon arrival for a recent stay at the lovely Glorietta Bay Inn, we discovered that Coronado truly is a “car-optional” environment and were able to easily navigate the relatively flat paths on foot and by bicycle.

GBI Marketing Photo Poolside 2

We chose the Glorietta Bay Inn (www.gloriettabayinn.com), a beautiful boutique hotel and historic landmark famous for its grandeur architecture, as “home base.” The former private residence of sugar baron John D. Spreckels, the hotel (which features 11 historic mansion rooms in the main original building circa 1908 and 89 contemporary rooms and suites in structures added to the property in later years) is situated across the street from Coronado Beach and a short walking distance from an array of retail shops and restaurants.

Defined by an artful blend of Old World charm and contemporary coastal comfort, the Inn features a scenic outdoor verandah, a storied music room complete with a baby grand piano and a sun warmed lobby that once served as the grand foyer to Spreckels’ home.

Each of the historic mansion rooms are uniquely styled: the Sugar Baron Room, originally the private bedroom of Mrs. Spreckels, features king-bedded room with a large balcony and a spectacular view of Glorietta Bay; the Spreckels Suite the private bedroom of John D. Spreckels, this beautiful room has a living room area with a convenient kitchenette, and a separate bedroom with a king size bed. French doors off the living room open up to a spacious balcony with an equally gorgeous view of Glorietta Bay. Amenities for all accommodations include the complimentary use of beach chairs, towels, and sand toys for Coronado Beach.

As our family discovered on similar sojourns to “the island,” it doesn’t take much planning to have a perfect day in Coronado. We had brought our bicycles and started off along Coronado Beach - a picturesque stretch of sand and surf that stretches for over a mile along Ocean Boulevard in front of historic and glamorous houses. Voted in the top 10 beaches in the USA by the Travel Channel, this long and wide beach is great for walks, runs, beach volleyball or sandcastle building. If you bring along a furry friend, there is a leash-free dog zone at the far end of the beach where pups chase each other in the waves.

GBI BAY K View Overall Shears Open

Fans of author L. Frank Baum’s iconic classic “The Wizard of Oz” will enjoy pedaling past the quaint yellow Cape Cod-style home (located right across from Star Park) that he rented during his stays and the place where he penned three of the books in the Oz series.

We spent the better part of an afternoon tooling around town, along the Bayshore Bikeway, past Glorietta Bay and the Coronado Golf Course and under the Coronado Bridge (if you continue following the well-marked bike path, you’ll end up at the Coronado Ferry Landing, where a ten-minute ride would bring you to downtown San Diego.) After our bike ride, we strolled Orange Avenue, a beautiful commercial boulevard that curves back to the Glorietta Bay Inn, and stopped in Bay Books where staff members leave heartfelt handwritten recommendations under their favorite reads and stumbled upon MooTime Creamery - where locals and tourists alike were lined up for what they all (accurately) claimed was “the best handcrafted ice cream and hand-rolled cones” in town.

We kept the “enjoy the outdoors” theme going through the end of the day, spending the afternoon and early evening playing in the waves and soaking up the sun on Coronado Beach. The kids spent the entire trip outside and active - and much to their parent’s pleasure, off their respective electronic devices. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed kicking back on the balcony with a glass of wine each evening and even managed to finish a couple of books we’d been wanting to get to for weeks (you’d think we would have found the time at home, but it seems as though there’s been no shortage of home improvement projects to focus on).

Our weekend away in Coronado was just what we all needed - a change of scenery and experience - at a destination fast becoming one of our favorites. Given its ideal location central to literally everything, its unparalleled amenity and service and laid-back charm, the Glorietta Bay Inn will undoubtedly be our family’s first choice for future visits.

There is perhaps no more educational and entertaining way to experience the La Jolla Ecological Reserve (the protected part of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park) than taking part in a kayak tour to explore the gorgeous sea cliffs and renowned Seven Sea Caves. Everyday California came highly recommended as “the” tour to take and it didn’t disappoint.

After getting geared up with helmets and life jackets, it’s was a quick stroll to the foot of Avenida de La Playa at the south end of La Jolla Shores. We kicked off our shoes at the “honor system” beach stand and headed to the water’s edge, where our guide, Trent, engaged the group a quick tutorial on the “do’s and don’ts” of paddling and we were off for the start of our two-hour tour.

IMG 1378

I’ve been on many a tour - land and sea - in my life and as amazing as the scenery is, I’ve found that a key component to how much you’ll take away from the experience rests with the knowledge and personality of your guide. We lucked out with Trent - a seasoned enthusiast who has been with the company for six years - and who proved to be a wealth of information about the environs while ensuring our group a safe, fun and highly entertaining experience.

Along the way paddling out to the caves (including Sunny Jim’s Cave and the Arch Cave), we saw amazing sandstone and limestone formations, sea lions sunbathing on the rocks, caught sight of bright orange Garibaldi beneath the surface (our California State fish) and even learned a bit about the kelp beds outside the caves. The water wasn’t quite clear enough to see the leopard sharks that Trent assured us were swimming around by the scores beneath us.

IMG 1418

When conditions permit, Everyday Callifornia guides help guests paddle inside Clams’ Cave - the only cave visible from land. Trent jumped into the water and literally guided our kayaks (two at a time) into the cave, keeping a running commentary on what to expect and introducing our kids to a giant sea lion inside that Trent surmised was the victor in a recent sea lion battle for this premium position.

On the way back to our starting off point, Trent stopped at the “perfect” spot to slide off the kayak for a quick swim in the 70-degree waters. Our 13-year-old son didn’t have to be asked twice and was the first one to jump in. Then it was back to the shoreline, where guides were waiting to help us “catch” a wave in. All in all ... a truly excellent adventure and one I’d highly recommend.

I’ve lived in Orange County a long time. Without completely dating myself, I moved here for college and never left. As a then-single 20-something through the years to today as a married mom of two middle schoolers, one thing has remained unchanged: Southern California’s coastal cities were then and are now of singular beauty and amenity, recreation and attraction.

NBH Exterior Beach and Boardwalk

One of our family’s longstanding choices for day-trip and “staycation” destinations is nearby Newport Beach - a world-renowned stretch of surf and sand that attracts tourists from all points around the globe. But these days - and certainly in these unprecedented times - it is local families like ours that are rediscovering this scenic seaside locale for family-friendly fun and getaway from the everyday.

NBH Guestrooms 118 Sailor 2 Bed Suite

One of our new favorite finds is the Newport Beach Hotel - where we felt perfectly in tune with the beachfront town’s long and sandy history. The property was built in 1904, just a year before the Pacific Electric Railway connected Newport Beach to Los Angeles. The hotel itself has changed hands a number of times - Four Sisters Inn began managing the hotel in May 2009. Its charm reflects the city around it, much like the picturesque waters of the Pacific just outside its front doors.

NBH Guestrooms 120 Sailor 1 Bed Suite

Each of the property’s 15 guest rooms and five spacious suites (complete with a kitchen, one or two private bedrooms and a separate living area are spectacularly appointed, with no detail left unfinished. Cool blue and white tones ensure that the California coastal ambience and aesthetic follows you wherever you are, and truly feel like a home away from home. Ensuring your stay is as safe as possible during these uncertain times, the hotel has been certified under the California Hotel and Lodging Association’s new Clean + Safe Program. The most stringent requirements and a dedicated staff make it an easy choice when picking a getaway location as we head into long late-summer days, or, like us, you’re looking for a safe option to take the family this fall when the kids are still home from school.

NBH Guestrooms 120 Sailor 1 Bed Suite Ocean Peek 2

A complimentary continental breakfast each day (temporarily suspended due to Covid-19), and a myriad of restaurants within walking distance make a morning, afternoon, or evening stroll a true delight. Our family of four booked the Sailor Suite with the two-bedroom layout with a fully equipped kitchen featuring a full sized fridge, four burner stove/oven, microwave, and all the cookware we needed blend, toast or brew to our’s heart content. It’s so easy to see why guests have been flocking here for almost a century, and after spending a few sumptuous beach days with the Newport Beach Hotel as our “home base,” it’s certainly no mystery why this waterfront inn is at the top of our family’s fall retreat list. Reinvented and elevated - two words that bless the beginning of every new luxury escape.

By the time my friend’s grand- mother passed away at 92, she had fallen six times. Two of those falls resulted in broken bones - once, her hip. Horrifying, to find oneself in that position. Tripped up by your walker or the corner of a rug. Often, a wet bathroom or kitchen floor.

She was in a home for five out of the six falls, and still, it took some time to respond, get her stabilized, diagnosed, and fully re- covered. Falls, my friend and herfamily quickly learned, are the leading cause of injury related deaths in Americans aged 65 and older. She didn’t end up passing because of a slip up directly, but her bones certainly didn’t give her a pass either, in those lastdays.

Home Safety Advisor’s President Dave Riggle has a similar story, as do so many around the country. His mother passed from a fall in her bathroom, and was the direct impetus for his business beginnings. “None of us five kids had any idea she struggled, or we would have fixed it immediately. I have skin in this game - I don’t want anyone else to suffer like my mother did.” While other home improvement companies may include walk-in tubs as a part of their overall offerings, safe bathrooms are the entire focus and area of specialization for Dave and his team of professionals. So much so that Dave personally interviewed over 400 seniors about the difficulties they were experiencing in order to provide the best possible product to meet their needs.

As Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS), Dave and his team understand the unique needs of older adults and will do everything they can to provide their clients and their families with a sense of confidence and safety in their own home.

While the business formally began in Indiana, the team at Home Safety Advisors expanded their operation into the Southern California market a year ago and are thrilled to have met with such a positive response and feedback to their scope of services. Many clients come to them via word- of-mouth. And it’s not hard to see why. Installing something that could literally mean the difference between serious injury or not is no small feat. And something that Dave’s team takes extremely seriously. All of their walk-in tubs and showers are madein the U.S.A., come with a lifetime war- ranty, are great for health and easy to clean. But perhaps a lesser known perk is the luxurious spa experience available in the privacy of your home.

“Their (occupational therapists) confi- dence in referring us speaks volumes about our capability and their trust in us,” says Dave. “This is rarely done in our industry, and certainly not by any big company.” The showers and baths are crafted right here in Califor- nia, providing clients a spa-like expe- rience with a side door. Once inside, just relax. Ergonomic faucets, a hand shower, and marine grade fiberglass combine to make your bathing experience relaxing, instead of stressful.

While most steps into a walk-in shower or bath are still 6-9” tall, Home Safety Advisors boast just a 2” threshold, low enough to greatly decrease - if not eliminate-your chances of spilling over the edge accidentally. Offering bench seats, grab bars, and shower wands, Dave can even customize the threshold or seat to fit the client specifically.

Southern California is well known for its gorgeous year-round weather. Truly though, there are few places with as mild and consistently lovely temperatures as La Jolla, a 7-mile oceanfront community jewel just 12 miles north of Downtown San Diego. Almost completely surrounded by beaches and bluffs, La Jolla boasts an everyday average of 70 degrees. Tide pools dot the coast, and the famous La Jolla Playhouse, founded by legendary Hollywood figure Gregory Peck, now lives on the University of California campus, just minutes from some of the best boutique shopping in the area.

A perfect escape from the normal humdrum, the seaside gem has leaned into the rapidly changing “new normal,” and established itself as the California Staycation capitol. At the gorgeous hacienda-style Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa, you’ll find that the luxury and joy of being away from home and taking a moment to reconnect with the ones you love hasn’t changed one bit, even if the guidelines and operations have. Rest assured, in any of the Estancia’s many deluxe guestrooms or suites, that the resort is taking care of every ... well, care during your stay.

Pres Suite Balcony

If you’ve been here before, your getaway may look a little different, but Estancia welcomes its guests to a “worry-free” experience (visit the web site for detailed information on the property’s rigorous hospitality and health protocols in place in accordance with government standards). For our part, it was a first-time visit for my husband, Tim, and I ... but after experiencing all that Estancia has to offer, most assuredly won’t be our last.

Beautifully appointed accommodations feature private balconies with picturesque views and patios tucked among lush landscaping for delightful views of Estancia’s gardens, water fountains, stone paths or tranquil pool area. With award-winning botanical gardens defined by nine sprawling acres of bouganvillea, olive trees and impeccably manicured greenery, it’s easy to see why the property has long been a favorite for weddings.

Estancia La Jolla

If you’re looking for the chance to slow down, try an “Aroma Flow” yoga class in the garden, splurge on an outdoor massage or simply soak in the sun-drenched saltwater pool for a few hours. Out with the family? Try one of the property’s many garden activities, or explore local La Jolla’s beach coves, tide pools and dining options. When available to operate, a fully equipped fitness center is ready and waiting for the early morning stretch or a late night jog.

Named one of the “World’s Hottest Hotels” and a 2019 Readers’ Choice Award winner by Condé Nast Traveler, the resort’s distinguished dining venues trace its roots to both Napa Valley to the north and Mexico to the south to serve an array of authentic West Coast cuisine. Sip wines from Trinitas Cellars at Estancia’s wine bar, savor decadent breakfast favorites with Southwest flair at Adobe El Restaurante, or sample Baja coastal-inspired cuisine in a hacienda setting at the resort’s signature restaurant - Mustangs & Burros.

20171213 Estancia 48

As a seafood aficionado, I was in seventh heaven with the menu offerings at Mustangs & Burros. From the Baja Shrimp bacon-wrapped and enhanced with tamarind BBQ to the shrimp ceviche and pan-seared salmon which arrives with roasted potato, street corn salsa, charred lemon and arugula, there were no shortage of options to tempt my palate. A straight meat-and-potatoes man, Tim opted for the grilled-to-perfection hanger steak with wild mushrooms and onions. Fan of chips and salsa as a starter? Not-to-be missed is the eatery’s charred verde salsa and a house-made guacamole.

Secret Garden

Sip the night away from a seat at Estancia’s wine bar, savor a cup of coffee and a good read in the garden, take a refreshing dip or bask in the sun poolside with fruity cocktail or fruit-infused water in hand. Al fresco, all luxury, all day.
