Makeup OrangeCratesThe Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. This uber-creative, one-of-a-kind show combines theater, performance art and art history. Each evening during the summer season, classic and contemporary works of art are faithfully re-created with theatrical illusion and real people posing as living pictures. A live narrator serves as a guide through the story of each recreation accompanied by the music of a professional orchestra.

POM CuttingGlass GaryPrettymanIn the early years of the 20th century, a new generation of impressionists and plein air painters set up their easels outdoors and reveled in the natural beauty to be found as far as the eye could see. In the 2018 Pageant of the Masters, “Under the Sun,” theatrical magic, live music and light-hearted storytelling will honor Laguna’s own and other artistic pioneers from around the world who left their studios in search of new inspiration.

Women’s Intimate Health and Wellness is Important

The medical device and pharmaceutical industries have made tremendous advances in male sexual health, finally, there is a breakthrough in female sexual health!

Childbirth and the natural aging process can cause changes which may affect feminine wellness. To address these issues, Dr. Fleming and her team now offer vaginal rejuvenation via a non-surgical, non-invasive in-office procedure with no discomfort and no downtime.

“Controlled radiofrequency stimulates new collagen and elastin production, resulting in better tissue quality,” says Dr. Fleming. “This revitalized tissue translates to improvement in laxity, relief from post-menopausal dryness, and help with stress urinary incontinence. Patients (and their partners) also report dramatic enhancement of their intimate relationships.”

“This is for the young mother of two who is afraid to jump in the bounce house with her children for fear of an embarrassing urine leak,” says Dr. Fleming. “This is for the woman with post-menopausal or chemotherapy-induced vaginal dryness that makes intercourse painful, which leads to avoidance, which strains relationships. Since its first Wills and Trusts Week in the fall of 2011, the Orange Catholic Foundation has had as one of its primary goals to encourage everyone to have an estate plan designed to provide for the needs of their families.

Each year in the spring and fall, the Orange Catholic Foundation works in collaboration with parishes and schools throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to provide information sessions led by local Catholic estate planning attorneys and financial advisors to help you protect and provide for your loved ones, update or create your estate plan, and learn more about wills, trusts, estate taxes, probate expenses, guardianship of minor children, selection of personal representatives, and more.

For convenience, the Foundation offers a series of morning and evening seminars that are scheduled at local parishes across the diocese.

While learning how to effectively plan a legacy, attendees at these sessions receive answers to such questions as:

  • Who will make my healthcare decisions if I am no longer able to act on my own behalf?
  • Who will have the power to manage our finances if we are no longer able to manage our property or financial affairs?
  • What is the difference between a will and a trust?
  • What happens if I pass away without an updated estate plan?
  • What are the advantages of pre-planning for my funeral expenses?
  • How can we leave a legacy of faith?
  • Who should we appoint as our trustees and successor trustees?
  • Who will be the guardian of my dependent children or child with special needs if something happens to me?

The Orange Catholic Foundation warmly welcomes all who are interested in attending one of the upcoming sessions during the week of May 21st - 26th. Times and locations for the spring Wills and Trusts Week are listed in their advertisement in this issue.

Everyone who attends and completes a basic introductory form will receive a complimentary consultation with an estate planning attorney within the next six months.

The Orange Catholic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and an autonomous pious foundation that exists to serve the Diocese of Orange, including its parishes, schools and overall diocesan mission. The Orange Catholic Foundation plans and conducts major diocesan fundraising programs including the Proud to be Catholic Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), the For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, the Conference on Business & Ethics, the annual Wills and Trusts Weeks and other special fundraising events. The Foundation also manages endowments and various charitable funds and grants funds according to the donor’s intent.

When I was a child, I remember my parents moving our family into a new house, with pristine, white carpets. Beautiful to look at, but completely impractical when you consider that two young children would soon be tromping about.

As expected, my brother and I managed to ruin a swath of the floor covering in spectacular fashion … and in relatively short order. Enough so that it was replaced with a more manageable shade. Had my parents discovered the benefits of professional carpet cleaning services like those offered by the Laguna Niguel-based Beacon Carpet Cleaning, they certainly would have been better able to keep their flooring, countertops and upholstery from looking like they’d survived the tornado of their kids.

Ken and Linda Rogers, who founded Beacon in 1988, originally intended to simply find something they could do side-by-side. Both having spent their careers in various customer service oriented businesses, and searching for an opportunity to branch out, they decided upon carpet cleaning. In the years since, the couple and their longtime staff “family” have set the standard in residential and commercial carpet cleaning across Orange County.

An IICRC, Wools of New Zealand and Carpet and Rug Institute certified firm, Beacon takes the process of education to the next level, ensuring their team of professionals are trained to an unprecedented degree of sharpness and quality. The Master and Journeyman Certifications, highest available in the carpet cleaning industry, ensure that Ken and Linda’s customers enjoy a necessary service given by a trustworthy crew.

Fast forward (a few) years and I’m now a grown-up with kids of my own. By pure happenstance, our family inherited the gorgeous off-white carpeting that came with the home we purchased a few years ago. Add the happy fact that our abode has been the scene of many an afternoon play date and the recent addition of a new puppy and you can probably imagine the toll the carpets have taken. But unlike my parents, I have long recognized the importance of calling in the experts - well before the point of no return.

When we called Beacon Carpet Cleaning, Ken personally came out to give us an estimate. In utilizing their services, I can confidently share that he, Linda and their crew - many of whom have been with the company for over a decade - are not only highly professional, but are among the nicest people in the business. They did a great job and given that our kids and pup are still young, we’ll very likely be calling on Beacon again in the not-to-distant future.

Maintaining one’s floors, showers, countertops, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, and other areas around the home can be overwhelming: with or without children running amok. Since its inception, Beacon evolved to encompass a complementary business - Marblelife Stone and Tile Restoration with the goal of engaging its clients on as many surfaces as possible. Beacon providing protectants and cleaning services for almost anything you can think of: your Grandmother’s antique Oriental rug to yacht and boat cleaning in the harbors of Orange County.

“Each of these surfaces work together to create a cherished expression of your identity, dreams, and values,” says Ken. “It’s a unique space to celebrate with friends, or just to enjoy time by yourself. We can meet you in that space and help you protect what you invested in, keeping it looking its best for as long as possible.”

Sean Jones: Inspired by Miles Davis’s Jazz

Friday, April 6, 2018, 8 PM

SeanJones Jazz Monster1Music and spirituality have always intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones. As a child he performed with the church choir in his hometown and switched from the drums to trumpet upon his first exposure to Miles Davis at age ten.

The New York Times describes Sean Jones as “a trumpeter with an incisive tone and a firm grasp of jazz traditions,” and JazzTimes writes, “When Jones solos, soaring with a gentle strength as his band swells behind him, it’s not just a pretty melody… It’s praise.”

My sister was hit by a snowboarder when she was sixteen. On skis, just a couple of turns from the bottom of the hill - in plain sight of a SLOW sign. The snowboarder was young; not as young as my sister, but still, a young man. My parents, long-time skiers, contacted him directly, trying to see if they could get any results at all: any reparations for their high-school sophomore, laid up on the couch for innumerable weeks. There was nothing they could do. I remember feeling helpless as a child, watching the entire drama unfold. I can’t imagine what my parents must have felt. No one could help. No loopholes. No empathy, from anyone else involved.

There is a longstanding joke in the mainstream media that all lawyers are snakes. The word attorney no longer brings to mind the grainy black and white image of Gregory Peck defending the downtrodden as Atticus Finch. Certainly, in some cases, the joke must contain some shred of truth. But at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie, the welcoming, family-like environment they’ve curated isn’t too far off from the home ambience of the fictional Finch family. Folks who actually want to do good in the world. Right wrongs. Obtain real results.

Suzanne Leslie is a managing partner and attorney at Allen Flatt for more than 30 years, and prides herself on the reputation they have built. “Our years of experience have given us more knowledge in the personal industry field than other law firms can claim. What sets us apart is exactly as our tagline says: experience, compassion, results.”

As a firm, Allen Flatt have helped many families through the emotional trauma of a great many personal injury cases. Though they have attorneys that focus on estate planning, preparing wills, trusts, and contest matters, personal injury hits the closest to home. “We care about our clients, and our primary focus is to help them deal with the difficulties of being involved in an accident- be it pedestrian accident, automobile accident, slip and fall, or dog bite.” Handling the claims process for their clients lets them pursue their medical recoveries in peace, unlike my sister, or my parents. Fighting a losing cause often takes more energy than simply healing - or letting someone else rest, to do battle with their own body and take the necessary steps to get back to normal: whatever the new normal looks like.

Offering a free consultation, with the promise that no recovery means no fee, attorneys like Suzanne offer their services on a personal level. “I started out in the personal injury field to help people. I want to make sure my clients feel taken care of through every second of their claim.” Recognized by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys and the National Association of Professional Women, Ms. Leslie has recovered millions of dollars for clients and thousands of settlements for clients.

“Everyone in the firm shares compassion for the clients more than on a business level, and many of us have had first hand personal experience in what they may be going through,” she says.

As a leader in her field, it is imperative to stay abreast of the newest strictures and developments in insurance law. The more she knows, the better her chances of winning your case. Atticus Finch would probably tell you that winning isn’t everything. But sometimes, to folks like my parents, to whom winning would mean seeing my sister get the reparations for her accident paid out, and letting her find her way back to walking again, winning is the only thing.
