But if you’re looking for inventive cuisine coupled with exemplary service in the spirit of a time-honored classic American steakhouse, there are but a handful worth writing home about. The benefits of being involved in youth theatre have recently been shown to have a lot more impact on the lives of young people than previously thought. In a recent study, youth theatre members were asked to agree or disagree with the statement “Youth theatre has the potential to completely change your life” and a staggering 85.59% agreed. The study goes on to illustrate the many ways in which youth theatre impacts upon the lives of its young participants including the development of social, creative, and communicative skills. One of the benefits the study investigates is its function in helping…
As part of Better Hearing Month, Mission Audiology is encouraging consumers to be more aware of their hearing health. Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans today. Although hearing loss is commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired individuals are younger than 65 years of age. However, with the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing. On average, most Americans consider hearing loss a condition that is simply associated with aging, and don’t know how to recognize…
When I was a child, I remember my parents moving our family into a new house, with pristine, white carpets. Beautiful to look at, but completely impractical when you consider that two young children would soon be tromping about. As expected, my brother and I managed to ruin a swath of the floor covering in spectacular fashion … and in relatively short order. Enough so that it was replaced with a more manageable shade. Had my parents discovered the benefits of professional carpet cleaning services like those offered by the Laguna Niguel-based Beacon Carpet Cleaning, they certainly would have been…

Cocktails, beer and a savory selection of barbecue items are also available for purchase. As part of the resort’s Community Footprints program, proceeds…
Making Your Memories with Rock & Roll and Doo Wop In the mid 1990’s I attended a concert in Glendale, Ca. that headlined the world-famous Platters. Knowing that the Platters had been around since the late 50’s I was somewhat surprised at how “young” they were. I attributed their somewhat unorthodox style to their longevity. Bringing a long playing 33 1/3 RPM album of theirs, I looked at the photos. The people on stage did not even remotely look like those on my favorite album. What was going on here? As the music industry grew to gigantic proportions, so did…

With the passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, two strategies to potentially maximize Social Security benefit payments were eliminated. An Overview Prior to the budget’s passage, married couples had two strategies to help maximize their Social Security benefits: “file-and-suspend” and “restricted applications.”¹ Under file-and-suspend, the higher-earning spouse filed for benefits and then suspended them, allowing the lower-earning spouse to claim a spousal benefit. This also let the higher-earning spouse accrue delayed retirement credits. Upon attaining age 70, the couple then could switch to each taking their own individual benefit to receive the highest possible amount. Restricted Application A…

Couples Beer-Cation

Written by
When you want a vacation and he wants beer, Carlsbad has your back.by Betsy Sanz I enjoy a good beer, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for one. My husband, on the other hand, would not only go out of his way, he would form every vacation around beer if no one else were to be considered. So when we were planning a short getaway, we decided to do something that would excite both of us: a “beer-cation,” where he would ensure we got plenty of great beer, and I would ensure we got plenty of “cation.” The…

Call me old fashioned, but I believe that physical photos are a medium worth preserving. When I recently sat down to put together my daughter’s baby book, I thought of how printed images might at times seem like a thing of the past. But then I can’t imagine showing off my family photos by scrolling through all the images I posted to Facebook once upon a time. Diana Schmitt of the San Juan Capistrano-based Accents Portraits by Diana understands the desire for individuals and families to preserve their most precious memories in more than merely a digital format. She has…
It’s a fact of life: As we get older, our joints get stiffer. But when a joint is damaged by arthritis or injury, the stiffness, swelling and pain can make it hard to perform simple everyday tasks like walking or picking things up off the floor. In the worst cases, pain can be constant, even when just sitting or lying down. With today’s advanced surgical techniques and technologies, the most painful, damaged joints can easily be replaced. And yet, many people who would benefit from joint replacement surgery don’t pursue it because they have misperceptions about the surgery. Here is…

When three-time U.S. Olympian Steve Scott was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, maintaining his quality of life and minimizing serious side effects during and after treatment were Scott’s primary concerns. The former track star at UC Irvine decided against conventional treatment options in favor of an advanced form of therapy: proton beam radiation. Scott’s tumor was located near a nerve bundle that controlled his bowel, urinary and sexual functions, which presented significant concerns. Surgery would require a “safety margin” around the tumor, which would disrupt the nerve bundle and likely cause incontinence and loss of natural sexual function. Nor…
