According to a recent LA Times article, “the Southern California housing market is red-hot again.” 2015 was the second-busiest year since the 2008 recession, and experts are calling for 2016 to be the year that the peak returns to Orange County. With so much hype in the forecast, it can be difficult for both buyers and sellers to track market trends, sift through all the numbers, and forecast what may or may not happen over years to come. I know I’d rather choose a new paint color or build my dream wraparound porch than pore tediously over CoreLogic statistics. And…

In the 5th century BC, Sun Tzu compiled thirteen chapters worth of military strategy and tactics. At a great many business schools today, The Art of War is required reading for those looking to conquer the corporate ladder, or succeed in courtrooms across America. What is missing from the classic text however, is the ever necessary treatise regarding the age old battle that rages in those homes of our American tycoons of industry and their corporate lawyers. That classic skirmish against cracked, aged, moldy grout in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. And the war cry? Care. How to care for…
My husband and I are huge fans of mixing our family’s travels with historic adventure, always mindful of creating wonderful memories while crafting an itinerary that blends fun with a bit of education. When we recently decided to trek to the Grand Canyon, we discovered what we believe to be the very best way to experience the majesty and magnificence of what is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World (and a trip that required very little “planning” on our part): An all-inclusive package that encompassed accommodation at the warm and welcoming Grand Canyon Railway…

The classic story of The Miracle Worker tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. It dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water”. For most of us, Helen’s…
A friend warned me that if our family spent a weekend at Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort, we’d end up booking our next trip before we even left the property. Nestled in the scenic rolling hills of the lush Santa Ynez Valley, Alisal is a full-service 10,000-acre, all-inclusive resort/dude ranch experience that combines the elegance and comfort of the western lifestyle with a working cattle ranch where 2,000 head of cattle and 100-quarter horses leisurely graze. Beautifully manicured lawns characterize the grounds of the main “resort” - connecting 73 California ranch-style cottage studios and suites to restaurants and recreational facilities.…
The Cancer Research Collaboration (CRC) was created with a single goal — to help patients beat cancer. We have worked tirelessly to bring state-of-the-art clinical trials to patients and to provide investigators with the tools to research the cause of cancer and to find a cure. One of our biggest initiatives is the development and funding of a biobank. This will house tumor specimens and blood samples taken from cancer patients, along with copies for their clinical history. These specimens provide genetic information that will help researchers develop new medicines, vaccines, and tests that will improve cancer diagnoses and patient…

Here in South Orange County, we’re pretty blessed to live so close to the coast and have an abundance of wonderful dining destinations to choose from. But for inventive cuisine and exemplary service in the spirit of much-loved classic American steakhouses and taverns, there are precious few establishments that rival Selanne Steak Tavern. Situated along Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, the restaurant is housed in a historic 1934 two-story country cottage complete with a faux water well and bucket pouring water, red brick walkways and wooden shingled roof tiles. Step through the hand-carved wooden door into the main entry…
Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes the return of popular musical ensemble Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox on February 17, 2017 in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. In 2015, the group’s sold-out tours of Australia and the United States prompted the Buffalo News to proclaim, “Postmodern Jukebox is literally a postmodern success, extending its reach from the virtual to the real world, touring and performing around the globe for an ever-growing fan base.” Created by Bradlee, the rotating collective of Postmodern Jukebox has spent the past few years amassing more than 600 million YouTube views and 2 million subscribers,…
The music and artists of the 1950’s and early 60’s By Joe D – The Doctor of Doo Wop® You don’t remember me, but I remember you… Tears on My Pillow – Little Anthony & The Imperials One cannot blame or give credit to the artists and songwriters of the Rock & Roll era for the sounds that were created in the 50’s and early 60’s. There was a natural evolution of the music that was started by “baba loo” Bing Crosby, Louie “Satchmo” Armstrong, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and sooooo many more!…

This green-eyed beauty is Squeeky, a seven year old kitty looking for a new start.  Squeeky is mild-mannered and very sweet would make a spectacular lap cat.  With her mellow personality, she would thrive in a quieter home with someone special to call her own.         Pop is a 1 year old neutered lionhead-mini-lop mix.  With his memorable hairdo and furry mustache, Pop is a real cutie with personality to match his looks! While he can sometimes be a little shy at first, but he loves to be held and cuddled. He absolutely adores pets and head…
In a musical tribute to the United Kingdom’s northern most country, former assistant conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, David Danzmayr, makes his Pacific Symphony debut leading three different musical perspectives evoking the wild, romantic landscapes of Scotland. Most recognizable are Max Bruch’s fantasy on Scottish folk melodies for violin, played with great virtuosity by Chinese violinist Ning Feng, and Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony, inspired by a walking tour of the ruins of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace. Less familiar but also highly evocative is Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn’s “Land of the Mountains and the Flood”—a “charming Scotch overture that carries you…
Injuries such as chronic back pain, trick knees, and sticky shoulders are not necessarily something you just have to live with. Massage techniques might hold the key to unlocking this old pain. Will Massage Help? The benefits of massage will depend on the extent of the injury, how long ago it occurred, and on the skill of the therapist. Chronic and old injuries often require deeper and more precise treatments with less emphasis on general relaxation and working on the whole body. Massage works best for soft tissue injuries to muscles and tendons and is most effective in releasing adhesions…
Did you know that approximately 1 of every 2 women experiences some form of urine leakage? This should never be considered a normal part of aging. Oftentimes, it can be treated non-surgically and without bladder control medication. Evans Tran, PA, at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Women’s Bladder Control Center, discusses this embarrassing condition and how Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation can help. Q: What is urinary incontinence? A: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition defined as an involuntary leakage of urine. UI affects many daily living activities and a person’s quality of life. Q: What causes urinary leakage? A: Twice…
We all know that treating an injury immediately after it happens can help minimize the pain and damage as well as facilitate recovery. But after rolling your ankle in a soccer game, or hurting your back when lifting your toddler, or tweaking your knee when stepping out of your car, what's best? Should you ice it to try to control inflammation, or would heat be better to promote circulation? While it's difficult to establish a fail-safe rule for when to apply ice or heat, the general directive is to use ice for the first forty-eight to seventy-two hours after an…

We knew we were in for a memorable weekend when the driveway to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar (fairmont.com/san-diego) took its sweet time delivering us to the resort. A canopy of autumn colors rustled in a lazy and surprisingly warm San Diego breeze as we made our way into the canyon just a couple of miles inland from the 5, which might as well have been 500 miles from kids, laundry, work, obligations. The autumn colors eventually broke to reveal an expertly meandering golf course, which in turn gave way to the fountained entrance to our longtime-in-coming getaway with girlfriends.…
