Here in South Orange County, we’re pretty blessed to live so close to the coast and have an abundance of wonderful dining destinations to choose from. But for inventive cuisine and exemplary service in the spirit of much-loved classic American steakhouses and taverns, there are precious few establishments that rival Selanne Steak Tavern. Situated along Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, the restaurant is housed in a historic 1934 two-story country cottage complete with a faux water well and bucket pouring water, red brick walkways and wooden shingled roof tiles. Step through the hand-carved wooden door into the main entry…
Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes the return of popular musical ensemble Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox on February 17, 2017 in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. In 2015, the group’s sold-out tours of Australia and the United States prompted the Buffalo News to proclaim, “Postmodern Jukebox is literally a postmodern success, extending its reach from the virtual to the real world, touring and performing around the globe for an ever-growing fan base.” Created by Bradlee, the rotating collective of Postmodern Jukebox has spent the past few years amassing more than 600 million YouTube views and 2 million subscribers,…

There was a natural evolution of the music that was started by “baba loo” Bing Crosby, Louie “Satchmo” Armstrong, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and sooooo many more!…

This green-eyed beauty is Squeeky, a seven year old kitty looking for a new start.  Squeeky is mild-mannered and very sweet would make a spectacular lap cat.  With her mellow personality, she would thrive in a quieter home with someone special to call her own.         Pop is a 1 year old neutered lionhead-mini-lop mix.  With his memorable hairdo and furry mustache, Pop is a real cutie with personality to match his looks! While he can sometimes be a little shy at first, but he loves to be held and cuddled. He absolutely adores pets and head…
In a musical tribute to the United Kingdom’s northern most country, former assistant conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, David Danzmayr, makes his Pacific Symphony debut leading three different musical perspectives evoking the wild, romantic landscapes of Scotland. Most recognizable are Max Bruch’s fantasy on Scottish folk melodies for violin, played with great virtuosity by Chinese violinist Ning Feng, and Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony, inspired by a walking tour of the ruins of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace. Less familiar but also highly evocative is Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn’s “Land of the Mountains and the Flood”—a “charming Scotch overture that carries you…
Injuries such as chronic back pain, trick knees, and sticky shoulders are not necessarily something you just have to live with. Massage techniques might hold the key to unlocking this old pain. Will Massage Help? The benefits of massage will depend on the extent of the injury, how long ago it occurred, and on the skill of the therapist. Chronic and old injuries often require deeper and more precise treatments with less emphasis on general relaxation and working on the whole body. Massage works best for soft tissue injuries to muscles and tendons and is most effective in releasing adhesions…
Did you know that approximately 1 of every 2 women experiences some form of urine leakage? This should never be considered a normal part of aging. Oftentimes, it can be treated non-surgically and without bladder control medication. Evans Tran, PA, at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Women’s Bladder Control Center, discusses this embarrassing condition and how Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation can help. Q: What is urinary incontinence? A: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition defined as an involuntary leakage of urine. UI affects many daily living activities and a person’s quality of life. Q: What causes urinary leakage? A: Twice…
We all know that treating an injury immediately after it happens can help minimize the pain and damage as well as facilitate recovery. But after rolling your ankle in a soccer game, or hurting your back when lifting your toddler, or tweaking your knee when stepping out of your car, what's best? Should you ice it to try to control inflammation, or would heat be better to promote circulation? While it's difficult to establish a fail-safe rule for when to apply ice or heat, the general directive is to use ice for the first forty-eight to seventy-two hours after an…

We knew we were in for a memorable weekend when the driveway to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar (fairmont.com/san-diego) took its sweet time delivering us to the resort. A canopy of autumn colors rustled in a lazy and surprisingly warm San Diego breeze as we made our way into the canyon just a couple of miles inland from the 5, which might as well have been 500 miles from kids, laundry, work, obligations. The autumn colors eventually broke to reveal an expertly meandering golf course, which in turn gave way to the fountained entrance to our longtime-in-coming getaway with girlfriends.…

Claims with Confidence

Written by
It is rare to find someone who can say that they appreciate adverse events in their life. More rare perhaps to find someone who will admit that such a calamity led them to a job that they love with a company that treats them with mutual respect and admiration. Nancy Stewart, a long time South County resident and mother of two filed a claim for a water leak with her insurance company and was repeatedly denied. While the problem stagnated, Nancy looked for help. How to go about maneuvering the claims process? How to protect her property and equity? Fortunately…
What we call Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for centuries in many cultures under many names. Early Roman rituals worshiped Lupercus, the Roman god of fertility, who blessed the young men’s rites of passage. Often when Roman armies occupied conquered countries they introduced the festival of Lupercalia in which boys drew names of girls out of an urn to determine their partners for the day or even longer. Pope Gelasius decided to replace the pagan ritual of Lupercalia with the celebration of St. Valentine because a man and a woman living in intimacy was thought to be too immoral. As…
Call me old fashioned, but I believe that physical photos are a medium worth preserving. When I recently sat down to put together my daughter’s baby book, I thought of how printed images might at times seem like a thing of the past. But then I can’t imagine showing off my family photos by scrolling through all the images I posted to Facebook once upon a time. Diana Schmitt of the San Juan Capistrano-based Accents Portraits by Diana understands the desire for individuals and families to preserve their most precious memories in more than merely a digital format. She has…
Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your run-of-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to…

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, an anatomist and physician named Julius Wolff theorized, and later produced results that followed the principles of mechanotransduction: the remodeling of bones in response to loading, or weighting. Essentially, what he sought to prove was that healthy bones will adapt to the loads under which they have been placed. For over a century, it has been studied and well-documented that bones that experience more pressure through certain types of exercise throughout one’s life, get stronger. Stronger bones help prevent fractures. However, until recently, no study was done to show how much pressure…
As Generation Xers start to age and join the baby boomers, exercise becomes important to fight excess weight that builds around the belly and chest. This excess weight can cause an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers and type 2 diabetes. Exercise is one way to lose weight and become healthier. Make sure to talk to your primary care doctor before starting any new exercise program. Being obese or overweight significantly impacts one’s longevity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 24 million adults over the age of 65 are categorized…
I’ve been a practicing urologist for just over 30 years. I have always stressed the importance of annual prostate screening because early diagnosis saves lives.  While some feel that delaying the diagnosis or treatment of prostate cancer is justified, rising death rates from prostate cancer show that this approach is ill advised. Prostate cancer is detected with a 15 second prostate examination and a blood test.  If either of those are abnormal, a prostate biopsy is the next step.  It’s virtually painless.  I can vouch for that because I just had one done!  Traditional biopsies are done with ultrasound guidance…
